To accompany Nicholas Day’s article about childhood memories, we asked Slate staffers about their earliest verifiable memory. (“Verifiable,” of course, is a loose term.) One Slatester swore he had a memory from before his first birthday; another remembers nothing before age 6. When is your first memory from? Were your parents “highly elaborative” storytellers?

    Under 2
I seem to remember being in my father's arms in line in a crowded office and reaching up to touch an overhead light and scalding myself. My parents have told me that this actually happened and that in fact it's when I said my first word: After I touched the light, my father said "hot," and I repeated, "ott." If it's true that I remember it, that's a very early memory—I think I was less than a year old. But it's also quite possible this memory is apocryphal, implanted a year or two later when my parents recounted for me the occasion of my first word. If that's the case, then what I'm remembering is actually a mental image that I would have conjured when they told me the story, and not the event itself. Memory's a weird thing. –Will Oremus
I swear I remember being weighed on the small child scale at my pediatrician's office when I was maybe 1 or 1½. If that was a memory implant, then my next "first memory" is getting so homesick at preschool that I literally made myself ill and my grandmother had to come pick me up and take me to her house for the afternoon. Age 3½. –Anna Weaver
This may sound weird but my first verifiable memory was the layout of a house I lived in when I was a year old in Rochester, N.Y. I asked my parents about it one day because we moved around a lot and I could remember the house layout but basically nothing else. They were blown away because it was a place we left when I was 18 months old and never returned to or even had photos of. –Ben Johnson

    2+
My memory, which my mother has verified and which does not come from any photo, comes from July 1972, when I was 2½ years old. My family flew to England for a vacation in Scotland. On the flight over, an older boy on the flight played a game with me where he took and hid my shoes. It was really fun. I actually have a second memory of the same trip (less verified) of the field below the house we stayed at in Scotland. –David Plotz
When I was 2½, we went to Oak Island, N.C, for vacation with some family friends. I remember fragments of the drive, mostly because we were all crowded in an RV together, and I remember that on a beach walk one evening, my parents tried to get me to take a picture with a giant sea turtle that had washed ashore. –Rachael Larimore
Around age 2, I locked myself into my family's apartment/hotel room (not sure what it was) by accident. My parents had left momentarily and had left either the oven or stove on (not sure) so panicked about a fire starting (I had fallen asleep). I remember this, and them banging on the door trying to wake me up, but I think some of it also might have been filled in by my parents telling me about it when I was older in my childhood. –Rachael Levy

I have memories from the time when I wasn't even able to walk.

One episode is sitting on a table, picking up and biting on something very bitter and starting to cry after that. Another one is being outside lying on something, with my mother nearby. I remember the perfect sunny day and peace. Then some other women approached and my mother showed me to them. I remember the feeling of discomfort and embarrassment that followed once surrounded by so many strangers.

I must have been about 1. Dad was still in VN and he was shipped over a week after I was born. Mom and I were living in a trailer in my grandfather's back yard. It was one morning, I had taken off my diaper and went out side on the front porch. Mom was behind the screen door with a flyswatter telling me to get back inside. Granddad was standing in the yard laughing his head off.

About the same time, Granddad was mowing the yard and for some reason stepped away from the mower. I was just walking and decided that I could mow the yard too. So I took off with the mower, the family behind me hollering and yelling.

I remember standing in a crib having my picture taken. I think I was around 2 (give or take a few months). I may have this memory because there is an actual record of the event.

Otherwise I remember my parents having parties at our house very late into the evening. They always had a live band, the room would be thick with cigarette smoke and there was lots of alcohol. In would stride a young Sluggo (3, 4?) in my pajamas. I was the life of the party. I also remember my mother taking us for walks through the neighborhood in the stroller (the old huge ones). I remember my younger sibling, so I was at least 1.5 - 2 years old, maybe 3.

I remember bits and pieces of the house I was born in, we moved out by the time I was 4. I actually live three houses down from there now.

I was about 3 years old and remember my mum being pregnant with my brother. The gardener was removing a rockery under her supervision, when a python emerged. He ran off screaming. She calmly picked up a large rock and threw it at the snake, striking it in the head.

I would've thought your father would've been long gone by then.

That's if your mother even knew which client he was.

We were visiting relatives in Columbia, SC. Their kindly old gardener walked in the room, a very elderly gentleman by that point, and doubtless the fellow had given a lifetime of excellent service to the family. My sister and I ran screaming from the room, shouting 'monster! monster!' Our parents had neglected to inform us that people could have skin colour like that. He was Black. We weren't actually frightened -- it was just a game, such as children play. I suspect he didn't appreciate being trolled, but I was 4 and my sister a year younger, so the whole episode was pretty improv. Young gentlemen in the South are called 'Master so-and-so' for a reason -- you don't earn the title 'Mister' until you are an adolescent at least. By 6 or 7 I was pretty comfortable with my new found role....

Actually, that is my second oldest memory, but I thought it appropriate for this forum. ;)

My earliest memory is when I was around 2 years old, I remember tripping and my hand landing on a nail that went right through my thumb. I then remember my thumbnail separating and me screaming, and blood. I'd say the next memory after that is when I burnt my hand on the stove, and it was the first time that I had been burnt. I'd guess a lot of people's first memories is the first time they were hurt or felt pain.

My brother telling me to get out of the cot and peel the wallpaper off the wall which my father had papered on during the day.
I remember clambering out of the cot and over the sides.....and stripping the still moist wallpaper off in strips............and then watching the door open and see my father standing there.
I also remember the beating i recieved for doing it.
I must have been about 2......my parents say i cant remember it....which is strange because it was me who reminded them of the incident which they had forgotten about.

Another time i remember waking up to see my father strangling me with a tie that i had gone to bed in.
For some reason i used to wear a tie 24 hrs a day and even went to bed in it........my father kept telling me to stop it or i would end up strangling myself.....anyway one day he started strangling me to teach me a lesson.
I was about 2 then as well.

Strange how parents always negate the beatings they dished out.

I remember a few things, but one that is most vivid is being around 3-4 and driving around with my mum in her Triumph convertable. A really fun memory is when I was older (10) and living on this side of pond, my old man got wasted on Vodka and asked if I would drive home. I duly obliged, got behind of the wheel of his '70 Impala and cruising home (Country), getting there safely, only to run into the garden shed, which destroyed it, along with my bicycle.

Times were so different back then.

My most vivid memory going as far back as I can remember is looking over to my left and seeing a hospital tag when I was 2-3.
