It does, though. I used to work for Bill Krejci (who was head of the physics lab teaching program at IU Bloomington... in addition to his popcorn farm west of town) http://nutribase.com/dfm/562.htm 'Indiana Gold Popcorn' ... sold in fine stores, and raised by one White as Fuck Hoosier farmer. Did I mention that my grandmother knew Orville Redenbacher personally, and thought he was a very nice man? She also met Herbert Hoover, during one of his whistle stop campaigns, but I put that down to youthful innocence. How's that for some Midwest name-dropping?
Oliver Perry Morton allegedly bounced my great-great-great grandmother on his knee. I challenge anyone to come up with family lore more obscure than that.
Unless someone has an ancestor who knew Sal the Erie Canal mule personally, and can explain why Hoosiers care about canals (Richmond *cough* Richmond), I suspect Johnson can be declared *THE SUPREME HOOSIER OF THE BEER BARREL* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_P._Morton The only possible way to be more Midwestern would be (1) to be, personally, a relative of Dan Quayle or better yet Evan Bayh or (2) to have your state legislature declare Pi to be equal to the sqrt(10), for engineering purposes. I say, until the H1-Bs conquer Indianapolis and give it to Pachystan, it just isn't going to happen. :platypus: ADDED: clue:
Michigan has a rather short growing season compared to the lower/more western Midwest states, so sweet corn season is a big deal here as the window for fresh local stuff is relatively small. Where I'm at, we can drive about 10-15 minutes out and get into rural country and find people selling it fresh at roadside stands, just like the old days. I peel the husk back, salt/pepper/butter it, put the husk back, wrap in it foil and throw it on the grill with steaks, brats, burgers and whatnot. White as fuck.
Didn't bother to click over, Mac - but yes, Silver Queen is one of the very best corns for taste, although it is an F1 hybrid that is bred for sweetness. No biggie though, it's not "GMO" Corn and beans are both vegetables that it's best to pick fresh and cook very shortly after picking if you want the best taste. Yep.
