He got it back, but without the memory card. This new policy had been enacted in the first place because of a previous lawsuit.

And what's the penalty if they do ?

Sounds like there really isn't one and this law is just an attempt to placate the public into going back to sleep. Laws without penalties are meaningless.

It might be time for citizens to start using more concealable recording devices when dealing with the cops.

That is what I gathered as well. This new policy seems toothless, but I think (could be wrong) since this policy is in place, it's now going to be easier to pursue successful civil suits against pigs who pull this.

In the comments section, someone mentions using the Dropbox app on their phone, which means as soon as they take pics, they go right into it instantly. And of course there was some of the usual "if you are doing nothing wrong what do you have to fear from the cops" nonsense in the comments as well.

If the cops are doing nothing wrong, they'd have nothing to fear from cameras.

A search on dropbox video indicates yes - that's good to know.

I'm kind of new to Dropbox myself and currently only have it installed on my PC (very handy so far), but you can definitely get an app for it for your smart phone as well.

Clearly. Cops in general don't take kindly to recording devices and want people to shut them off.

If it's reasonable to bash someone who's stealing your wife's handbag, why not deck a cop for trying to steal your phone?

It's perfectly reasonable, but American cops are above the law. Assaulting an officer, even if he's the aggressor, is a felony that will get you put away for several years and involve the loss of all civic rights.

Rights. LOL. Rights are privileges whose existence in concrete reality is ultimately dependent on the kinetic power of violence. The law is ultimately meaningless if it can't be enforced. 90% of overbearing, power-tripping police like the thief mentioned in the first article would be much more civil and polite if the civilian population used force to keep them in line. The 'right' to bear arms doesn't mean shit. It's the will to exercise them that has meaning.
