Just arrived today at Chez Ragno:

Meh. This is their first, and for some reason has always been hard to find w/o paying some ridiculous sum. As usual with these retro-hard rockers hyped as sounding just like Zep, Purple, Humble Pie, Sabbath, etc, they mostly don't, although you have to appreciate their sense of history and loyalty to a dead ethos. A better ethos by far than what we've had since, for sure..... but it's still a code that's deader than Kelsey's nuts. None of which means this can't be a storming, roof-raising barnburner - except that it isn't. It's an OK bongload of rifferama; no Wolfmother, though.

Now here is a band who have been absolutely fucking impossible to find.....I only knew of their existence through hearing them on some label-sampler, and their occasional contributions to Musea's utterly-insane Colossus Project multi-cd prog operas. Ostensibly, they can't get even reasonable distribution in the States because they sing in French and have always done so, which makes no sense - it's 2012, and whatever remaining market there is for heavy rock and prog is clearly an international market no longer automatically-allergic to non-English vocals. (Also, as one of a tiny handful of French bands not on the Musea label, you can't even find their stuff on Amazon except as downloads - I'm an old guy and as such I abso-fucking-lutely refuse - or as the odd $40 import. No thanks.)

Anyhow now that we're past all that preamble let me say this - The Laser's Edge finally has most of the Nemo catalogue at normal pricing ($12 generally; this double-disc reissue was 16, which is fair) and at long last - after only sampling dribs and drabs, just enough to whet my curiosity further - I grabbed this 2-disc reissue of their 2006 album SI, and its immediate 'sequel' a year later, SI PARTIE 2, considered to be possibly the best work of their best period.

And the initial verdict is oh my dear God....this is superb. Monstrously good musicianship, heavy on guitar - compositionally stellar, veering in and out of multiple genres: heavy rock, pure symphonic prog, angular almost-funk, pastoral folk, jazzy here, metallic there.... with balletic grace, the music somehow always coherent and whole. I'd be lying if I said I understood a word of what's going on here, but that's never prevented me from doting on Minimum Vital or Banco or Ihre Kinder or November. The key is the quality of the vocalist, not the language being sung. So long as the singer's decent, often the language "barrier" becomes a veil of tantalizing exotica that adds a further layer of character to great music. And Nemo is definitely great music.

I'm midway through my second spin, so I've had no time to look up any YouTube clips they might have. Just know that this band - and in specific this set - ABSOLUTELY gets the Ragno Buy or Die imprimatur.

O'Zebedee: 697 Points (I actually can't listen to David Yow either, though I can listen to Flipper, which may even be worse. No matter - I recommend Jesus Lizard, but I refuse to stand by it if someone does buy it.) Dec 9, 2012

Nemo are a current French progressive band who've somehow flown under my radar, which is a shame, as they're really rather good, certainly going by their fourth album, 2006's Si Partie I (II appeared the following year). The band's sound is an amalgam of current and past styles in the genre, metal guitar interludes followed by electric piano workouts or lengthy vocal passages, despite which it all hangs together quite nicely, thank you very much. The three shorter tracks in the middle are bookended by the two epics, the second of which, the five-part Apprentis Sorciers, is the album's crowning glory, throwing just about every trick in the book into the pot, while remaining cohesive.
There isn't a lot of 'Mellotron' to be heard here, with naught but a string part on opener Douce Mort, clearly sampled, but it's hardly the album's defining feature, anyway. I haven't heard anything else by Nemo, but if Si Partie I's anything to go by, I look forward to expanding my knowledge of their catalogue. No Mellotron, very little fakeotron, but a great deal of excellent music. Recommended.

(Bear in mind that albums are judged and critiqued by both musical content and "Mellotron content"......if you don't have at least Tron samples on your record, you don't even get reviewed. But PM (Andy Thompson, actually) is the closest we have to a traditionally-'professional' reviewer within the genre....

Nigger music sucks. Plain and simple. from the general attitude of the sub-human socio-parasites to their anti-white, 'gonna-kill-me-a-white-debbil' lyrics. They can all suck on a gun barrel and gently squeeze the trigger.
