George the Animal Steele eatin' them turnbuckles....that takes me back!

Of course George was the only possible choice to play Tor Johnson in Tim Burton's ED WOOD, but I have to admit I'd thought he was long gone already. Hard to believe he was only in his early-mid 30s in his hairybacked heyday.

79 is ancient for a pro wrestler. The guys in their 50's are living in fear of every sneeze or tiny bit of heartburn because their buddies are dropping like flies. Steroids alone really aren't that bad for you, but when you take them to compensate for the fact that you're staying up until 4am every day with mountains of cocaine and busloads of hookers, your life expectancy starts to rapidly drop.

Most of these guys live a lifestyle that makes Motley Crue look like a bunch of choir boys. The few I've met have all been cool as hell, but trying to trade stories about drinking, fighting and fucking will humble you real goddamn fast.

Yeah but George was a 60s-era wrestler. Lotta straight-up big fat guys in wrestling then, or at best, whatever weightlifters looked like before juice. Wrestlers didn't get monstrously built/cut till the early 80s, when wrestling first exploded nationally. But if you recall guys like Bob Backlund, they just weren't that yoked.

    On the other hand:

Figure he's 35 or so in this picture.
