Haven't taken time to play any online games in years. I'll have to check some of the links out in the future, and great thread.

    Steam under Linux

This should become a comprehensive guide to install and use Steam under a Linux environment.
Please note: Games run with these methods will be slower than running them on Windows because the games are not native executable files. To get the best performance you will need to use the native Beta Steam client (Valve Linux blog).
To do: Add a guide to get Steam running and additional information.

Maniac Mansion I remember playing on C64 and could never beat. I tried again years back on a C64 emulator and strolled through it. Still a classic. Way better than Zak McKracken and Alien Mindbenders.

    Some other old games:

I can see myself killing time with the classic Bard's Tale III. :agree:

LoL is somewhat similar to wow, free to play but if you want the nicer weapons and upgrades you gotta $$$ up.

Yes I've heard that, if you are good at it and play in the ranked games, you really need to cough up some dough.

World of Tanks on PC. Free armored vehicle combat MMO. The first 3 tiers are fun to play before the grind kicks in. www.worldoftanks.com

If you get in to your first couple of games (you will die quickly) and want to learn more I recommend reading the game mechanic wiki here: wiki.worldoftanks.com/Battle_Mechanics. Pay special attention to the section on Vision. It isn't a simulator, so the vision mechanics have their own special rules you need to be aware of and abuse to induce rage in your adversaries. The key to win is dishing out damage without taking any. Cover is your friend.

Also: the processing is done server side. I haven't seen a hacker in the two years I've been playing.

WoW was never a pay to win game, although in a new patch they're going to include an in game store so that is a possibility. LoL just lets you buy the better champions and skins for them if you're willing to just pay $ for them as opposed to grinding for days to get a single new champion, you still have to pay for the champion skins I believe though.

Meant to say the game play was somewhat similar, and yes WoW recently added premium skins for $15 but they are aesthetic only. Wow will always remain $15 a month, but when you are finished you can always sell your toons and get much of that money back.

Black Mesa (originally Black Mesa: Source; stylized as BLλCK MESA) is a third-party total remake of Half-Life, Valve Corporation's critically acclaimed debut title, on Valve's Source engine. The 40-person volunteer development team says they hope to create a more engrossing in-game world with more varied, complex environments; and more challenging, realistic gameplay.[citation needed]

The first of two releases of Black Mesa is currently available free for download. This release includes over 8 hours and 14 chapters of gameplay. The final release, via steam, is under development.
Please download Black Mesa from our lovely friends below. Having issues installing or running Black Mesa? Read our Installation Manual.

I like Lord of the Rings Online ... Its free to play for the first 40 levels and you get something like 500 quests ... over all its a good deal for the price -- 0.00$. I use the Steam version.

Fitz alerted me to the release of EUIV (it isn't technically 'free' though) and it is extremely difficult to put down.

I hope I'll eat my words one day, but I cannot see how one could make a better grand strategy game. The Civilization series was awesome, but inherently limited by its lack of historicity (aside from the macro-level material, that is - Zulus sure as hell ain't building a spaceship within the confines of any perceptible dimension or reality) and the limited number of possible factions in one game. The Total War series is great, too, but far more concerned with the tactical set-piece pitched battle. The Paradox games are the best.

Internet Arcade puts 900 free coin-op games in your browser

You can't beat the feel of an old-fashioned arcade machine where you stand there pumping coins into a slot, trying to extend the gameplay and lay claim to the highest score. The problem with arcade machines is that they take up a lot of space and you can really drain your budget acquiring the machines or feeding endless quarters into their hungry maws. It's not quite the same, but you can still get an arcade thrill by heading over to the Internet Archive for its freshly launched Internet Arcade. The Internet Arcade comes stocked with hundreds of games from the 1970s through the 1990s re-created through the JSMESS emulator to run on Web browsers. The offerings range from familiar games like Super Pac-Man, Q*bert and Street Fighter II to more obscure titles like Spiders, Sky Kid and The Three Stooges (a game from 1984).
