Yeah, I remember him. I'm surprised he was only 81, seemed older. If you had his books laying around your pad for the chicks to see you were "sensitive" and OK and shit.

As a matter of fact, I never owned any of Rod's poetry collection but my mommy did and I just took her copy to bed with me when I was feeling alone and confused.

“Be gentle with me, new love.
    Treat me tenderly.
    I need the gentle touch,
    the soft voice,
    the candlelight after nine.

There's been so many who didn't understand

so give me all the love I see in your timid eyes
    but give it gently
    Please.”

This is the first I hear of his being gay. Of course, The Barrel + "poet" (even a shitty poet) usually = homo.

Am I gay? Let me put it this way, Collectively I spend more hours brushing my teeth than having sex so I refuse to define my life in sexual terms. I've been to bed with women and men and in most cases enjoyed the experience with either sex immensely. Does that make me bi-sexual? Nope. Heterosexual? Not exclusively. Homosexual? Certainly not by my definition.

My wife used to split her sides laughing at "Listen to the Warm". Even the title by itself would convulse her.

I guess he was one of the few 60s-era relics who passed me by entirely. I used to connote him with that godawful early-70s cultural event called Jonathan Livingston Seagull, but I suppose he had nothing to do with it.

Generally, however, that whole alternate-spirituality deal, from Indian yogis eagerly partaking of Western punanni like they were rock stars, to rediscovered texts like Hesse or the Desiderata being appropriated by Generation Smokin' Bananas, was one part of the 60s counter-culture I found fascinatingly-ridiculous but uninvolving. It was hard enough just keeping a straight face throughout "MacArthur Park" or "The Windmills of Your Mind", fer Crissakes.

(On the other hand, if you could zap me back there in a time machine, a crackle of electricity and a sooty smudge would be all the physical evidence remaining to prove I was ever here in this reality.)

The poem Bluto posted struck me more as the ultimate beta male trying to show just how incredibly attentive he was to women's needs. If anything, I think I have less contempt for faggots than for guys who use feminist thought as a mating strategy.

Makes me think of the disgusting jewboy group moderator at the ADV program, which is ostensibly an outpatient program for wifebeaters. He would constantly spew this nauseating stream of uber-feminism in the most transparent attempt at winning over his female coworker. Occasionally she would just glare at him and say his name, and then he'd shut his mouth and hang his head.
