Damnatio memoriae began in modern times in the jewish USSR. There is a story that after Comrade Beria was executed and became an unperson in 1953, all the owners of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia received a lengthened article about Bering, with the kind request that they should glue it over the Beria article.

But we shouldn't worry. The idea that cities or states named after slave owners like George Washington will ever be renamed is totally crazy, and that is as likely to happen as two men marrying each other.
