    @Fatale

    I haven't been to an Olympic venue, if I'm traveling that far, I would want to do a package deal. Prices are steep for opening/closing and packages, but decent for individual events.

    Tickets to 2016 Olympics aren't selling, and Brazil is scrambling to boost demand

    With just half of tickets sold and only four months before kickoff, Brazil's new minister of sports, Richardo Leyser, is looking into ways to boost ticket sales.

    He told Brazilian newspaper Folha that the Brazilian government may purchase tickets that will be distributed to public schools. He said public officials must also work to boost worldwide confidence in Rio's ability to host the games and ensure travelers' safety.

    @Fatale any personal updates?

    Note: it give an exact number of scientists (not area of expertise) but not how many WHO or IOC who vetoed to postpone or move the Olympics.
    Rio seeks to allay concerns with Olympics just 2 months away

    Last week, a group of 150 scientists suggested the Olympics should be postponed or moved because of the outbreak of Zika, a mosquito-borne virus linked to severe birth defects. But the World Health Organization said there was ''no public health justification'' to call off the Olympics, and the IOC has repeatedly said the games will go ahead.
    ----
    Not one case of Zika was recorded during 44 test events involving 7,000 athletes and 8,000 volunteers, Andrada said, adding that Rio organizers would ramp up a public campaign to convince athletes and visitors that the games will be safe.
    Nuzman said leading athletes such as Usain Bolt, Rafael Nadal, Neymar and members of the U.S. basketball team have said they have no worries about going to Rio.
    However, American cyclist Tejay van Garderen withdrew his name from consideration for the games amid concerns he may contract Zika and pass it along to his pregnant wife

    Move 'em back to Greece. They could use the tourism bux. Do the Olympics really need to be a global super-event?

    THE OLYMPICS THROUGH THE YEARS

    The first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. In the opening ceremony, King Georgios I and a crowd of 60,000 spectators welcomed 280 participants from 13 nations (all male), who would compete in 43 events, including track and field, gymnastics, swimming, wrestling, cycling, tennis, weightlifting, shooting and fencing. All subsequent Olympiads have been numbered even when no Games take place (as in 1916, during World War I, and in 1940 and 1944, during World War II). The official symbol of the modern Games is five interlocking colored rings, representing the continents of North and South America, Asia, Africa, Europe and Australia. The Olympic flag, featuring this symbol on a white background, flew for the first time at the Antwerp Games in 1920.
    The Olympics truly took off as an international sporting event after 1924, when the VIII Games were held in Paris. Some 3,000 athletes (with more than 100 women among them) from 44 nations competed that year, and for the first time the Games featured a closing ceremony. The Winter Olympics debuted that year, including such events as figure skating, ice hockey, bobsledding and the biathlon. Eighty years later, when the 2004 Summer Olympics returned to Athens for the first time in more than a century, nearly 11,000 athletes from a record 201 countries competed. In a gesture that joined both ancient and modern Olympic traditions, the shotput competition that year was held at the site of the classical Games in Olympia.

    The Olympics were good back when it was the USA and Europe against the Soviet Bloc countries.

    Nowadays the Olympics just plain sucks if you ask me, too many stupid events, too much commercialization.

    I wouldn't go to Brazil if my life depended on it.

    Cancel the Olympics?

    They were cancelled in 1916, 1940, 1944, all b/c of WWI and WWII.

    Zika is already in the US, so the athletes or spectators can't use that excuse now.

    Crime, poverty, unprepared, Johnson?

    I like weightlifting, judo and gymnastics. Otherwise its a bunch of useless, boring bullshit. Winter events are the worst. How can anyone on earth possibly give a fuck which group of spandex-clad pussies can do the best job of sitting in their sled or sliding rocks across a frozen pool while somebody frantically sweeps the ice with a wicker broom?
