These are of gold panning/mining in the Peruvian jungle in 2007. This was a few dozens klik's from Puerto Maldonado. In other words, the middle of nowhere jungle. The only reason anyone was there was the gold. And they were stripping/raping the jungle with heavy equipment too. Do you know what "hi-banking" is? It's illegal everywhere, even in Peru except when they can get away with it. My buddy Tomas convinced me to go, his friend was acting as a guide and was friends/partners with the "mine" owner. I basically chickened out after 3 1/2 days. Tomas was leery also. The AK-47 fire at various hours was sobering. No law, no cops within 40 miles. Claim jumpers were a possibility thus the automatic weapons. We knew that going in. I was younger then......
On the plane into the aeropuerto near Puerto Maldonado. Rio Madre de Dios.
Puerto Maldonado - in all it's glory.
On the way to the gold fields.
Tomas in the blue. Don Julio changing the tire. It was his car.
Gold is a fever in mens souls.
The clean up. (collect)
Yeah, I got a little gold. No, I wont tell you how much. We ate real well but I lost 12 pounds in the muggy heat. My camera stopped working from the seepage into it. I had a few more pix but I've lost them since then. All in all I'm glad I went but it was pure craziness.
