He formed the North Ward First Aid Squad, ostensibly to escort residents of the predominantly Italian North Ward through racially troubled areas. But the group's nighttime street patrols drew charges of vigilantism. And Mr. Imperiale's defiance, even demagoguery, only made things worse, his critics said. At one point, he warned that ''when the Black Panther comes, the white hunter will be waiting.''

"He was born on July 10, 1931 in Newark, New Jersey. He later served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. In the 1960s he opposed desegregation busing in the United States. In July 1967 advocated armed white self-defense and he formed the North Ward First Aid Squad as a vigilante group. In 1973 he won a seat in the New Jersey State Senate as an independent candidate. He was defeated in 1977, but was elected again in 1979 as a member of the Republican party. In 1974, he ran for Mayor of Newark, New Jersey and lost to Kenneth Allen Gibson. Imperiale received 43.7 percent of the votes. He died on December 27, 1999 at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey."
